What is English?
English is a West Germanic language. Other West Germanic languages are:

German, Danish, Icelandic, Swedish, Norwegian, Dutch..

English was originated from the fusion of some dialects that Germanic settlers spoke.

BRITISH EMPIRE:

In the 16th , 17th , 18th and 19th centuries UK dominated an important part of the world:
North America, some parts of central and south America, India, an important part of Africa, and almost all Oceania. For this reason the English language it is spoken in this parts of the world.

Why is English so important nowadays?

English is a very important language and sometimes it is referred to as a international language, but isn't official language in most countries.
It is used for aeronautical and nautical. It is also official language in a many international organizations, including the International Olympic Committee, European Union, United Nations...
